Configure Half Days
You can configure half days to support time-off requests Request subtypes that employees use to request time off for vacation, illness or recovery, appointments, personal time, or other absences. Time-off requests can be configured to support many different employment scenarios. for the first or second part of a shift. The system calculates the hours, paycode A category of time or money that employees earn, for example, Regular Hours, Bonus, or Sick. edit, and open shift A shift that is scheduled for a job, but no employee is assigned to work it. that replace the time off.
When you configure half days, you assure that the calculations of schedule coverage, schedule totals, totalizer exceptions, schedule overrides, and breaks are correct, and that open shifts replace only the part of the shift that actually is taken off:
- Time-off requests in half days are based on a symbolic amount Instead of entering a specific amount for a paycode, a symbolic amount lets users enter a value such as full day, which translates to the number of hours in your shift. Other default symbolic amounts include half day, 1st half day, and 2nd half day.: the employee’s scheduled shift, pattern-based shifts, or contract hours. The first and second halves can have different symbolic amounts.
- You can configure the lengths of the halves, which can be any fraction of the shift length and not only exact halves. Example: An 8-hour shift can be split into a first half that is 3 hours long and a second half that is 5 hours long.
- You can configure the length and start time of paycode edits that replace the half-days off.
- Time-off duration edits can overlap punched The entries on a timecard that mark the beginning (in-punch) or end (out-punch) of a work interval, such as the beginning of a shift or transfer. spans.
If you do not configure half days:
- Symbolic amounts are divided by two to calculate the hourly duration of a half day. Example: The halves of an 8-hour shift are each 4 hours long. For a 10-hour shift, the halves are each 5 hours long.
- The time off does not distinguish between the first and second half of the shift; it defaults to the first half. The half-day off overrides the entire shift and cannot override part of a shift. If an open shift is created, it replaces only the entire shift; you cannot split the shift into half being worked and the other half becoming an open shift for someone else to work.
Tip: For quarter-day and other durations of time-off requests, configure Default Symbolic Amounts so that employees can select Hours durations.
